So far, I cannot get the Straight Scoop newsletter to appear in proper Microsoft Word columned format.  Maybe I'll get it done yet.

However, I believe you can click on these two links to download page one and page two from July 2007....

2nd Adopt a Highway Cleanup Featured "The Few, the Proud…"

On July 7th, Tom Conway, Paddy Fitzpatrick, and Paul Humphrey represented our detachment at the 2nd scheduled Adopt a Highway cleanup. The trash was neither interesting, nor voluminous, but this small patrol completed the second phase of our mission. Hopefully, we can get a few more volunteers for the third pick-up. Mark your calendars now for September 8, at 8:00. In case of rain, call Paul at 239-8095.

Changes to the Birthday Ball Schedule

According to 1st Sgt. Campbell, G Company has cancelled their Birthday Ball scheduled for November 10th in the Dells. They are expecting to deploy in the next couple months. And as usual, the Detachment has stepped up and will take over responsibility for the primary Ball in the area. We moved our date back to November 10th, and the Elks Club has graciously allowed us to hold the Ball there on the 10th. If you attended last year or heard about it here in these pages, you know this year's Ball will be great. So, mark your calendars for the evening of the 10th. Get your dress Blues or your Tux out and ready, and be prepared to stand tall for the Marine Corps that day. Details will be available in the Scoop or through Ralph Brooks.

Toys for Tots Needs You!

Due to the Company deployment, the responsibility for staffing and supporting the 2008 Toys for Tots program rests squarely on the shoulders of the I & I staff, our Detachment, and the wonderful volunteers in our community. Please step forward to commit to even one event, or an afternoon of manning a barrel, or helping the I & I staff pick up toys or sort them. Or hopefully you can participate in the unforgettable toy distribution at the Alliant Energy Center, the week before Christmas. Janine Punzel and Mary Lloyd have already stepped forward to help coordinate this program. Please help us out. As soon as we can publish dates and events, we will do so. Remember, this is the signature event for the Marine Reserves and this year our support of those Reserves.

Commandant’s Corner

By the looks of things, we are going to get busy fast. We have raised about $200.00 at Quaker Steak and Lube during their “Bike Night”. So far Roger Boeker, Ralph Brooks, Mary Lloyd, Bob Lloyd and I have stood at the booth. Planning for the Birthday Ball will soon be underway. We are hoping to pack the lower level of the Elks again this year.

Last month I mentioned the first portion of our mission statement. The second portion states:

We should be “banding together those who are now serving in the United States Marine Corps and those who have been honorably discharged from that service that they may effectively promote the ideals of American freedom and democracy, voluntarily aiding and rendering assistance to all Marines and former Marines and to their widows and orphans.”

As Marines are still serving in harms way, this portion of the mission statement is very important. We need to ask ourselves if this is a worthy portion of the mission statement. I think we all would agree it is. So we should further task ourselves to volunteer for programs as they become available. The Toys for Tots program is only a couple of months away, and I can see our help will be needed more than in years past.

If you are so inclined, which I hope many of you are, please contact me if you are interested in helping out on one of our committees or contact the committee chairperson directly. The more diverse backgrounds on the committees the better results we see. They typically meet once a month, usually over a meal and beverage, and create the foundation for the league.

In conclusion, at the next meeting we will cover information pertaining to the first Women Veterans conference, committee updates, an initiation ceremony, and other news. Hope to see you all August 2, 2007 at 7:00pm at the Elks Lodge.

Doug Manthe
Commandant, Four Lakes Detachment of the MCL

New Committee Structure More Streamlined

Following up on the work of Past Commandants Ralph Brooks and Roger Boeker, Commandant Manthe has restructured the Detachment Committees:

The Finance and Budget Committee is chaired by Bob Lloyd, and is staffed by Paymaster Jim Hooker and Roger Boeker.

The Membership and Recruiting committee is chaired by Jim Blankenheim, assisted by Paddy Fitzpatrick and Joe Cerniglia.

The Memorial Committee is chaired by Ralph Brooks, assisted by Roger, Bob and Mary Lloyd, Doug Manthe and Jim Blankenheim.

The Semper Fi Committee is chaired by Doug Manthe, and staffed by the various event coordinators:
Adopt A Highway (Ken Kozubek),
Toys for Tots (Janine Punzel and Mary Lloyd), Flag Detail (Paul H),
Marine Corps Ball (Ralph),
Foundation (Ralph)

If you can spare some time to help in one of these areas or
events, please let us know
